Lalit Kala Akademi Contact Details

The Lalit Kala Akademi (National Academy of Fine Art) is the premier fine art institution of the Government of India to promote, spread and develop Indian fine art culture. It is a non-profit, autonomous body, funded by the Ministry of Culture. In pursuance of its role, LKA holds exhibitions, institutes scholarships, sponsorships, fellowships, assistance schemes, Lifetime Achievement Awards, and publishes documentary material. It also conducts Triennale India, and the National Exhibition of Photography and Art. It is an autonomous organization, established at New Delhi in 1954 to promote and propagate understanding of Indian art, both within and outside the country. Among the various auditoriums in Delhi, Lalit Kala Akademi is one of the best auditorium in Delhi to serve as an academy of fine arts.

It has its headquarters at Ravindra Bhawan, Ferozshah Road, New Delhi, and has regional centers at Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Garhi (Delhi), Kolkata, Lucknow and Shimla. The youngest of the three Akademies founded by the Government of India, the Lalit Kala Akademi was established in pursuance of the dream of the first Prime Minister of independent India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru for a cultural and national identity. Thus the Lalit Kala Akademi as one among three such national organizations, that emerged. The LKA was the principal establishment to direct its focus on activities in the field of visual arts. The structure of the Akademi consists of a General Council that comprises of artists, art critics, architects, photographers, experts in folk, tribal and traditional arts, art administrators and representatives of various government organizations. The Akademi uphold the democracy by electing 15 members from artist constituencies. The Lalit Kala Akademi has instituted several awards and honours to be conferred on artists in recognition for their outstanding work in the field of art. Of all these awards and recognitions, the honour of Fellow of the Lalit Kala Akademi is regarded as the highest honour conferred on an artist by the Lalit Kala Akademi. The Library came into existence along with the Lalit Kala Akademi in 1954 in a small room in Jaipur House, New Delhi. The Library was shifted to its present premises, Rabindra Bhavan (New Delhi) in 1962. Having started with 140 titles which included books and journals on art, it has now grown to become one of the finest libraries catering to the subject of art. This reference library now includes over 8000 books on painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, graphic art, architecture to cater to the various needs of its readers.
