Sharing the third position in terms of oldest engineering colleges in Asia, College of Engineering, Pune was established in 1854. It is an autonomous engineering college with an affiliation to the University of Pune, India and is located at the confluence of two rivers, the Mula and the Mutha. The college was one of the first few colleges established by the British to serve the Indian Subcontinent and the foundation stone of the new institute was laid down by Sir Bartle Frere. Initially, it was started as the 'Poona Engineering Class and Mechanical School' to train subordinate officers for carrying out public works like buildings, dams, canals, railways and bridges. Later on, in the year 1864, the school became the 'Poona Civil Engineering College' and the number of courses were also increased from Mathematics, Drawing, Surveying and levelling, building and construction to forestry and agricultural subjects. In the year 1911, the name was again changed to the 'College of Engineering, Poona' and the first class of the Bachelor of Engineering degree graduated in the year 1912. Undergraduate admissions to the College are competitive and are based on merit and on the basis of the marks secured in MHT – CET though earlier it was based on the percentage of Science subject's marks secured in Higher Secondary Certificate exam of Maharashtra. Along with affirmative action programs existing for students belonging to socially and economically backward classes there are programs for students from North – eastern India, Kashmir, people working in Gulf countries, foreign nationals, foreign students and person of origin (PIO) in the college. The reservations for different categories are based on the Government of India and Government of Maharashtra rules. Also reservations in seats are provided for SC (Schedule Cast), ST (Schedule Tribe), NT (Nomadic Tribes), OBC (Other Backward Class), PH (Physically Handicapped) and female candidates.

College of Engineering, Pune is also the hub of various curricular, extra-curricular and technical activities which attracts participation and praise alike from numerous colleges in India. The students of the institute have a great legacy of excelling in both academics and sports and have won various laurels and accolades. Zest is an annual sports competition where students from institutes such as IIT, Nit, IIST, and other educational bodies across the states like Gujarat, Punjab, Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh participates in. on the other hand MindSpark is the annual technology festival hosted by the College with the idea originating from the need to unite various departmental level festivals that were scattered across the academic calendar. The MindSpark organisation consists of roughly 20 students managing the administrative portfolios assisted by a team of approximately 800 coordinators and volunteers. MindSpark is traditionally held in the first fortnight of October where 50 events across various disciplines of engineering take place.
