The College of Engineering, Trivandrum was established in 1939 and owes its foundation to the bold and inspired vision of Sree Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, the then Maharaja of Travancore. Commonly known as CET, the institute is the first Engineering College in the then Travancore State. It is the top ranked engineering college in Kerala, and one of the top engineering schools in India. Extending over 125 acres (500,000 m²) of land, College of Engineering has one of the most spacious campuses in the country. With the establishment of the Directorate of Technical Education in the late fifties, the College administration came under the control of the Government of Kerala. In 1960, the college was shifted to its present 45 hectare campus at Kulathoor. The main vision of the institute is to facilitate Quality Engineering Education to Equip and Enrich Young Men and Women to Meet Global challenges in Development,Innovation and Application of Technology in the service of Humanity. Initially the college used to intake 21 students each for Degree and Diploma courses in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical branches. Over the years, the intake of students increased and as of now with eight full-fledged departments offering eight undergraduate, 19 postgraduate and doctoral programmes under the University of Kerala, the College has around 3500 students, 285 teaching staff and 290 non-teaching staff. B.Tech, B.Arch, M.Tech, M.Plan, MCA and MBA and evening courses are also offered by the College. It is one of the few technical institutions in South India, which admits students on a mostly merit basis through an All Kerala Engineering Entrance Examination. The students joining the college are the toppers of that examination. Besides the regular BTech, BArch and MTech programmes, the college also conducts Part Time BTech classes for meritorious Diploma Holders. The college was ranked 18th overall among 100 Top Engineering colleges of the country by Dataquest-CMR Top T-Schools Survey 2011. The undergraduate and postgraduate courses are accredited by AICTE.

Increasingly recognized by recruiters for its abundant talent pool and excellent facilities, CET's placement process aims to match the requirements of recruiters and the aspirations of students. The Placement Officer who is assisted by student representatives from all the departments heads this unit which was set up as a voluntary organization in January 1984. The college had also started a central computer facility since 1999 for the better sharing of computer resources by the College. Besides all these the institute is well equipped with Centre for Training in Software Engineering (CTSE), guest house, technical library, hostel and campus LAN.
