| The College of Engineering, Trivandrum was established in 1939 and owes its foundation to the bold and inspired vision of Sree Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, the then Maharaja of Travancore. Commonly known as CET, the institute is the first Engineering College in the then Travancore State. It is the top ranked engineering college in Kerala, and one of the top engineering schools in India. Extending over 125 acres (500,000 m²) of land, College of Engineering has one of the most spacious campuses in the country. With the establishment of the Directorate of Technical Education in the late fifties, the College administration came under the control of the Government of Kerala. In 1960, the college was shifted to its present 45 hectare campus at Kulathoor. Over the years, the intake of students increased and as of now with eight full-fledged departments offering eight undergraduate, 19 postgraduate and doctoral programmes under the University of Kerala, the College has around 3500 students, 285 teaching staff and 290 non-teaching staff. B.Tech, B.Arch, M.Tech, M.Plan, MCA and MBA and evening courses are also offered by the College. It is one of the few technical institutions in South India, which admits students on a mostly merit basis through an All Kerala Engineering Entrance Examination. The students joining the college are the toppers of that examination.
